Formed in 1994, Champaign–Urbana’s Castor are known for their “fluid” sound, often changing time signatures several times in a song while maintaining the flow of the music. They released two albums on Mud Records, the first Self Titled in 1995, the second Tracking Sounds Alone 1997. During Castor’s initial run they toured with other influential Champaign-Urbana acts Braid and Hum . In 1997, Castor toured with Milwaukee’s legendary The Promise Ring on the Nothing Feels Good Tour. Castor also frequently toured with Kansas City’s Shiner , eventually calling in Shiner bassist Paul Malinowski to produce and mix Tracking Sounds Alone. While Castor never quite gained the spotlight of their peers, Castor’s music nonetheless became a favorite among musicians and music scene junkies. Math rock hooks were the style of the time, and Castor wavered between early emo-core, indie rock, and the fury of 90’s fuzz.
On February 24, 2018, Castor reunited for the first time in 20 years, opening for Hum at Delmar Hall in St. Louis, MO. Initially the idea of a reunion was as silly as all reunions, but Castor found themselves playing better than the first time around, and decided to make the reunion permanent. Castor is currently writing new material, and playing select shows. Castor hopes to produce new material in 2018/2019.
